Miccosukee is a small unincorporated community in northeastern Leon County , Florida , United States. Miccosukee was a major center of the Miccosukee tribe, one of the tribes of the developing Seminole nation, during the 18th century.

Miccosukee, like other unincorporated areas in northern Leon County, is an area of rolling hills dotted with ponds and lakes.

The large, swampy Lake Miccosukee borders the eastern edge of the community. The town of Miccosukee or Mikasuki was settled by members of the Miccosukee tribe, a group of Creek origin who had settled in Florida and become part of the developing Seminole nation.

The Miccosukee often fought armed battles with white settlers. It was mapped by the British in and originally called Mikasuki with 60 homes, 28 families, and a town square.

Some 70 gunmen protected the town. It was the capital of the short-lived State of Muskogee. At the time he visited on his voyage of destruction in First Seminole War , " Andrew Jackson and his men were stunned by the sheer size of the Miccosukee town.

The Trail Indians, as they were called, generally kept more traditional practices. They were less interested in establishing formal relations with the federal government than those Cow Creek Seminole to the north who started moving to reservations around the same time.

In , the Seminole were identified for termination of federal status; the Seminole Tribe of Florida organized as a tribe and were recognized in That process had pointed out cultural differences between the groups, and the Miccosukee gained state recognition separately that year, and federal recognition in The Traditionals or Independents did not affiliate with either tribe.

The Miccosukee historically inhabited the upper Tennessee Valley in present-day Georgia , where they were originally part of the Upper Chiaha.

Later they split: the Miccosukee Lower Chiaha migrated northeast to the Carolinas and the Upper Chiaha, also known as Muscogee , migrated west to northern Alabama.

Under continuing encroachment pressure from European-American settlers, many migrated to northern Florida during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Lower Chiaha comprised the major part of the Seminole tribe, which formed in the eighteenth century in Florida through a process of ethnogenesis.

They numbered about 6, by the early 19th century. It relocated several thousand Seminole and hundreds of Black Seminoles , who lived in close association as allies, to the Indian Territory.

They were originally given land under Creek administration and later given a separate reservation. They had moved into central Florida and the Everglades to try to evade European-American settlement pressure.

During this period, the Miccosukee mixed with the Creek-speaking Seminole, but many maintained their Mikasuki language and identity.

The tribe had long maintained its distinction from the Seminole, whom they believed were more willing to adapt to the majority culture.

The federal and state governments persisted in treating them as a unified people, and there was a third group, known as Traditionals or Independents.

An issue that divided them was the majority Seminole filing in with the Indian Claims Commission for claim for compensation for lands taken by the US government.

The Miccosukee and Traditionals contended they had never reached an official peace with the US in Florida, and they wanted a return of their land rather than financial compensation.

Welcome to Miccosukee Indian Village. Our family group visited here one sunny February morning. After taking photos outside in front of the impressive outdoor exhibit, we went inside and browsed through the gift shop.

I enjoyed seeing all the handmade tribal art, crafts and jewelry. There were plenty of touristy items, too.

We then paid our admission into the village. Since we were very early for the tour, we decided to walk around the village on our own first.

No one was at the various Chickees yet and even the alligators were just sunning themselves or sleeping. We strolled along the raised Boardwalk and out on the Observation Deck enjoying lovely views of the Everglades.

By this time, more visitors arrived. Soon it was time for the announced Alligator Demonstration where we watched a wrestler perform in a pit filled with alligators.

There was time for photos holding a baby alligator before the tour began. A group of teenagers traveling from France were part of our tour group that morning and an adult with them translated everything that the guide said.

They were all well behaved and listened carefully. We made several stops visiting the Cooking, Eating and the Sleeping Chickees to learn about tribal life.

Following these stops were demonstrations of traditional arts such as Patchwork, Beading and Wood Carving. There was plenty of time for questions.

After the tour we went inside the attractive and interesting museum. I viewed a feature film about the Miccosukee culture and life plus other colorful exhibits, diorama, films, art and videos.

We had a wonderful visit and learn much about the Miccosukee people. It just felt very touristy to me. The village also has a small shack called Our Little Shack that serves food such as burgers, fries, alligator bites and beverages.

There are also picnic tables. If you are interested in learning more about Native Americans this is a neat place to take your family. It is very manageable and educational.
